Re-loading XP

I am working on a pc for a friend that had a virus and it
left a trojan horse. It seems ever since to kick the cd
drawer open and closed continually. I tried several
things and decided to reload the OS (XP home). It is a
HP pc that he purchased at Wal-mart and did not come with
the xp cd or restore disks. I personally have an xp disk
that is registered on my pc and want to know if I loaded
it is there a way to find out the product code for his
machine so that when it loads back up, I can use his
product code and registration? Or any other ideas?

That won't work. The XP product key is typically located on a sticker on
the machine. However, if your friend's PC came from Walmart, then the key
that was provided was an OEM key that most likely will not work with your
copy of Windows XP.

I would look on your friend's PC and see if I could find a folder called
OPTIONS or I386. Then, look in that folder and see if you have a folder
called WINNT32.EXE (Setup program). If so, this folder contains everything
you will need to install XP. If you cannot find this folder (usually
under C:\Windows) then I would call HP for replacement media.

Hope this helps.
