Using win XP Pro,I want to do a re install of the OS.I want to re
install so that I have to download all updates from the begining.
I want to save all data files.I have copied "My Document" folder where
most of my files are.

You can do what we call an inplace upgrade.

Boot off the CD, choose Enter for a new install, F8 for the EULA and when
Windows finds you C:\windows directory choose R for repair.
 
He meant "will NOT have to be re-downloaded..."

If you perform a 'Repair' install of XP the Updates will have to be
re-downloaded and all your data files should remain intact, although it may
be prudent to backup those data files first:

Thanks everyone.I will try the repair mode and get back to you in a
couple days.
