Re-installing XP

Tried to re-install as not able to network Laptop with
desktop anymore. Install gets to 'Installing devices'
after awhile a message box 'Files needed' appears asking
for 'PCouffin.sys'. Suggested location is in DVD Xpress
folder. This was a trial Software which has now expired.
Although I managed to find a copy of this file and give
location computer restarts and eventually gets back to
the same point. No matter what I do I can't break out of
the cycle. Can anyone help?

Also: When re-installing Windows you should disconnect all peripherals
except for your monitor, keyboard and mouse.
