Re-Installing XP Home

I am giving up on Windows Vista until it's more stable. For a variety of
reasons I need to re-install XP Home but only have an Upgrade version which
will not work because there is not an appropriate previous version of Windows
installed. Any way I can get round this without buying a Mac?

The only way to "clean install" an upgrade version of Windows XP
is to have an old Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME CD on hand
to insert in the CD drive when requested to do so during setup.
Otherwise, you'll need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows
XP, which is considerable less costly than "buying a Mac".

Do you have an install disk for a qualifying product such as Win98 or
WinME or even Win95? It doesn't have to be installed. If not look
around for a used copy on E-bay. Last option is to purchase an OEM copy
of XP.

Thanks all. That's the conclusion I had reached. No I don't have original
disks. Probably an OEM version many releases ago and a bunch of upgrades
ever since. I thought there might be a way around it as I have my valid, not
in use, Product Key. I've worked in IT for 34 years and frankly Microsoft
software is just too difficult to use. I'll get off to the Apple Shop now if
that's OK....

ROFL!

By all means, it's ok to get off to the Apple Shop. One less troll.

*More* stable? How can you give up something and complain about its
stability when it hasn't even been released yet?

For a
variety of reasons I need to re-install XP Home but only have an
Upgrade version which will not work because there is not an
appropriate previous version of Windows installed.

That's not correct. The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a
previous qualifying version's installation CDnot to have it installed. When
setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version installed, it will prompt
you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the previous
version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds quite normally and
quite legitimately.

If you don't have such a previous qualifying version's CD, used copies of
Windows 98 can be bought very inexpensively, for example on eBay.
