OK, this is probably a dumb question but I'm a dumb guy.

I want to buy a copy of XP home and install it on my
Son's aging P800 but at Christmas, I want to build him a
new machine and transfer the license to that new machine.

I would scrap the old box.

Is this allowed? Do I have to do anything special when I
do it because I will effectively be registering the same
copy on a different box?

Roger,

I'm afraid this might get rather confusing!

- Yes, transferring a Retail FULL copy of an OS is legal.
- BUT if the underlying "qualifying" OS is an OEM copy (on the old P800),
then a Retail Upgrade can't be used on a new system, UNLESS you also have an
old copy of a Retail qualifying OS hanging around (and not being used as the
underlying license for another system).

Trying to clarify a bit:
- Each system needs a FULL OS to start with. OEM OS can NOT be transferred
to another system once installed on the original system.
- Retail Upgrade OS can only be installed over a legally Licensed prior OS.
- Since the new system you plan on building needs a Full License OS to start
with, the easiest way would be to just buy an OEM copy of XP Home when you
buy the components to build the new system.

[snip]
OEM OS can NOT be transferred to another system once installed on the
original system.

I belive you are mistaken on this point :-)

My understanding is that an OEM OS can be transferred as long as a piece of
the original machine's hardware (such as the MB or HD -- not sure what other
components would qualify) is transferred along with the license.

There are lots of OEM OS sales on eBay that include a piece of the original
machine's hardware and both eBay and M$ allow those sales to complete.

I would check into it.

Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Greetings --

No, the OEM EULA is quite clear on this point. Once installed,
the OEM software becomes a permanent, integral part of the entire
computer on which its installed, and can never be transferred to
another computer under any circumstances. The fact that such sales
transpire on eBay is no guarantee of their legitimacy; eBay doesn't
care as long as they get their cut and have "plausible deniability."
