My son up graded to xp prof. from xp home using an unofficial copy of xp
prof. I want to go back to xp home. I used the back up utility that came
with xp prof. to back-up files and settings to a second hard drive, then
proceded to reinstall xp home on the main hard drive. I now see two versions
of user files under Documents and Settings and most of my applications don't
launch

Do I need to do a clean install or is there a way to go back to XP Home and
save my files and settings?

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to
format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path
or technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
