Re-installing Windows XP

When re-installing XP, not updating, but actually re-installing, does the XP
installation re-format the harddrive? I know it deletes everything from the
computer, but does is actually re-format the harddrive as well?
 
Yes. The installation will Format the hard drive. It will give you the
option of whether you want to perform a QUICK format or normal format and
it will also allow you to choose the type of file system. i.e. Fat32 or
NTFS.

Thank you! I thought so, but a friend of mine tried to tell me that I needed
to format the hard drive first.

During the installation, you'll be given the option of formatting
the partition, but it shouldn't happen automatically - that would turn
a repair installation into an exercise in futility. (Of course, this
assumes that your using a real installation CD and not some OEM's
Recovery disk.)

This isn't correct. While the installation routine certain offers
the user the option to delete, create, and format partitions, this
won't happen automatically. If it did, it would be impossible to
perform repair installations.

I'm getting the message, "cannot format user partition" after installing 8 xp
home edition cd's I bought from hp. When I don't boot from the cd, I get
NTLDR is missing. I'd appreciate any help.
