Yes, reinstallation will require reactivation, but if you haven't changed
any hardware, it should be a snap. As long as you do a "repair"
installation, you shouldn't lose any of your installed programs or data, but
you will have to reapply all updates.
See
www.dougknox.com, Win XP Tips, How To Do a Repair Installation.
But, before you take the plunge, why not tell us what your problem is.
Reinstalling should be your last resort.

I use a HP Pavilion PC and it has a CD writer and a DVD
drive. For some reason, the CD writer's power light
began to come on and the tray would pop open and then
close, all with no action on my part. When this
occurred, it also had the effect of slowing down other
software useage. I tried removing installed software
used to burn CDs, but that didn't stop it. HP's tech help
was no help at all, and in fact, made the problems worse.
I was afraid the problem would continue to affect the
basic operation of my programs and valuable data, so I
opened the box and disconnected the power and ribbon
cable from the CD writer drive. All programs work
normally now, the floppy drive works, and so does the DVD
drive. I can't burn CDs, but I can live with that. HP's
help tech suggested reinstalling Windows ME, which was on
the machine when I bought it, then reinstalling Windows
XP. I was afraid to try that, so I took the action
described above. Any further suggestions would be
appreciated, and thanks very much for your help.
