I have been getting corrupt file messages recently. My
system is also giving DLL error messages. From everything
I have been able to determine, it is time to FDisk the
system.

However, Windows 2000 does not have the FDisk function. I
have been told that I need to start my system from the CD,
wipe the partitions and reinstall my programs. I would
just like to hear from someone who has done this and get
some advice on the best procedure to follow.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Hi Pat,

Maybe not. Try this.
First go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
and run the free online virus scan
This is important. When it gets through, print it.
Go to Google and search for the infection(s) on your list.
Find the Symantec fix sheets on each infection and/or file(s)
Start line by line and do everything they say to do. If you fail to do all of in that exact
order, it will be back.

After you get through with that, and you still have any problems, try booting into Safe Mode
with a Command Prompt, and do the following:
type FDISK /MBR
after you get through with that, do this:
type SFC /SCANNOW
after you get through with that, do this:
type CHKDSK /R
answer "Y" for yes and restart (this will take about 30 minutes, so go get a hamburger)
after that, do this:
Defragment 3 passes..(three times)
after that, do this:
Go into the BIOS and change the first boot device to CD-ROM, put the installation D in the
tray and restart. When the boot comes up, you don't need to change your partitions, just
choose installation (not repair). Go through the enter set of prompts like you are going to
do the entire install, but at the last chance, you will be asked again if you want to
"repair" or install, choose "repair". You will need the CD Key, so have it ready. let it go
through and replace all of your install files. (This is called and inplace upgrade or
install)

After you get through with that you will have virtually a clean install and still have all
your data and important file, like Address Book(s), and Favorites and folders from the email
client.

After that, you need a good AVP (up-to-date definitions), a firewall (hardware or software),
AdAware, and SpyBot S&D. If you don't, get ready to do a clean install in short order. Oh,
go change the first boot device back to floppy. Have a nice day.

Read the post just before yours, where someone went and clean installed.
