I want to replace my existing 40GB HD with one of 250GB. I am going to
partition it to 50/100/100 GB sizes (so it will be my master drive) and I
want to put WindowsXP in the 50GB partition.

What do I have to do to prepare to re-install prior to taking out the old
drive?

What will I need to do once I install the new drive and turn the computer
back on?

Do I need a bootable disk, etc...?

Partition the drive and let xp format it at set up,but leave the others
"raw",
you can format them in xp.

Thanks Andrew.

After I have partitioned it, I want to set it to master and take out the old
drive. So will I just turn on the computer and go? How will I initiate the
install of Windows? I want to re-install windows, not transfer old hard
drive files. Do I need to do something before I take out the old drive?
This will be like starting a whole new system.

None of the above. Assuming that there's nothing on the old drive you want
to keep, begin by just taking it out and replacing it with the new one. You
*don't* begin with a separate step of partitioning the drive, as you would
have with Windows 98. Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot
order if necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation. In the first step of installing Windows you will tell it to
create a single partition of 50GB (don't accept the defaut of the entire
drive).

You can find detailed instructions here:

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

Once you've done that, you will have Windows installed on a 50GB partition
with the rest of the drive unallocated. Now go to Start | Programs |
Administrative Tools | Computer Management. Click on Disk Management and
create your two remaining partitions there.
