I bought a Dell Dimension 4300 from a friend. when i tried to use the modem
(56K) dial up from my Dell dimension 3000 ther were no drivers for this modem
as my friend had DSL. i went and bought a new modem. And now when i try to
log on the message comes up the i need to register the Windows XP before i
can log on. What happen was when i bought the new computer I put the XP on
the computer and found out after that i could not go on line to resgister. So
i just went back to using my okd computer. How can I either get registered or
or completley reinstall everythig from scratch?

Buying new hardware because you don't have the drivers it pretty
extreme, I guess its only a modem, but you can just o to the
manufacruers website and download the drivers you need to install the
hardware. WinXp wants you to register, however from my exoperience you
don't need to and the alert can be silenced somewhere in control panel,
what exactly is the message your getting, you say yoy can;t logon, you
mean to the pc itself or the internet.. I have not heard of windows
blocking users from doing either of these things without being
registered.. you can reinstall, but you'll get the same message
anyways. Unless you install a different OS.. in which case, restart pc
with install cd in the drive, all new OS distros have the option to
wipe your hd before install.

That advice is a mess. To the OP: this is not an issue of *registration*; it
is *activation* that is needed. Did you wait 30 days before activating your
copy of XP?

The OP will simply need to make a phone call.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302806/

"Windows Product Activation (WPA)
Users can run Windows for 30 days before they must activate the product. In
Windows, users are reminded with increasing frequency as they near the end
of the 30-day grace period to activate in the manner that is described
while the Setup program runs. If users do not activate by the end of the
grace period, they must activate upon the next logon. Users cannot use the
full Windows functionality until they successfully complete activation.

"Note To activate manually through a voice phone call, use your regional
phone number on the activation screens."
