I installed a copy of xp pro (oem) on a new machine and activated it. Later discovered that the program I was trying to run on it was having problems. XP was taken off and 2000 was put back on and everything runs ok.
What do I need to do reactivate this copy of xp for use on another machine
Thanks
Bryan

Legally?
Buy another copy of the OS.

Technically?
I'm not going to tell you which story to make up. heh

Sorry, you cannot. Once activated, an OEM licence is forever tied to that
system - you cannot install it on any other. This is the (main) reason I'd
never contemplate purchasing OEM - you end up negating the savings in the
long run.

I see. In that case would it be possible to move the application to another machine and re-install the xp pro back to the original machine?

The COA states " 1-2CPU" I took that to mean that it could be installed on a second machine, such as a laptop. No?

You would be mistaken. 1-2 CPU means how many CPUs the operating system will
recognize. The part you should pay attention to would be:

Installation and use. You may install, use, access,
display and run one copy of the Product on a single
computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device
("Workstation Computer"). The Product may not be used
by more than two (2) processors at any one time on any
single Workstation Computer.

As you can see, SINGLE WORKSTATION is the key.

As far as your ability to "move the application to another machine" - yes..
That should be as easy as installing it on another machine. You could then
re-install the OEM XP back on the machine you originally installed it on and
then call/activate by internet with little to no problem.

No. You're one of these people who refer to the entire system, rather
illogically, as the CPU; which is rather silly as CPU stands for 'Central
Processing Unit' - how can that be the entire system?!

1-2 CPUs means exactly that - it will recognise up to two processors; IOW
you can have two processors in the same computer.

Greetings --

You can't, I'm afraid. Didn't you bother to read the EULA to
which you agreed during the installation?

OEM versions must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a
motherboard or hard drive, if not an entire PC, although Microsoft has
greatly relaxed the hardware criteria for WinXP) and are _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which they are installed. An OEM license,
once installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under
_any_ circumstances.
