re-importing PST files

Hey guys,

some help would really be appreciated, as there is some important data
to be rescued here.

Let me tell you the history of my problem:
I exported all e-mails together with the address book to a PST file
from Outlook 2000. Then I burned the file to a CD using Nero. The
whole procedure was necessary as my laptop urgently needed a new
system and formated hard-disk. THen I reinstalled windows (2000) and
also Office XP. I copied the .pst files (there were several) back to
my harddisk and used the import-tool of Outlook to re-import the PST
file. THe first problem was that the files were read-only (from the
CD), but I changed the properties of the files, and thought they now
should be re-importable. Bang. No, I get an error message saysing,
these are not VALID .pst files.
Te strange thing is that Outlook did import the archive.pst file, but
did not want to import any other files.

Things I've tried already:
- I installed Outlook 2000 instead, because I though maybe the pst
file definitions differ between the versions. Nope. Didn't help
-I've changed the file names. Didn't help either.
- I've tried importing the files on other computers. No difference.
- I've scanned the internet for help. Nothing except this guy, who
seems to have the same problem:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?theadid=48818

Apparently something changed with the .pst files on the way, and now I
can't get them back.

Any ideas?
Help mucho appreciated!
Thanks,
Nick

Try just opening the file instead of importing.

I exported all e-mails together with the address book to a PST file
from Outlook 2000.

First slight error. Don't export. SImply copy your PST to the CD.
Then I burned the file to a CD using Nero. The
whole procedure was necessary as my laptop urgently needed a new
system and formated hard-disk. THen I reinstalled windows (2000) and
also Office XP. I copied the .pst files (there were several) back to

file.

Second mistake. Don't import. Simply File>Open>Outlook Data File.
THe first problem was that the files were read-only (from the
CD), but I changed the properties of the files, and thought they now
should be re-importable.

Theoretically, they should be.
Things I've tried already:

Try simply copying the PST to the CD on the first computer, copying it from
CD to the HDD on the second system, removing the Read-Only attribute, and
then use File>Open in Outlook to open it.

Brian.Tillman is the name, smiths-aerospace.com is the domain.

I don't speak for Smiths, and Smiths doesn't speak for me.

Unfortunately I cannot go back to where I started, becasue the HD is
formated and the system reinstalled....

- Thanks, but I've already tried opening instead.
- And meanwhile I've also tried scanpst.exe, which only reproduced the
folders but no e-mails.
- I've also installed a e-mail recovery programme (easy recovery) and
also this programme could not find a single e-mail in those files.

It seems as if the pst file was translated into another language,
which cannot be re-read by outlook any longer...

Any other thoughts,
Cheers
Nick
