Hi, could someone please tell me what the C:/WINDOWS/PREFTECH folder is
for.
If it is only for temporrary files, than how often do they get deleted?
Can you manually delete the contents of this folder?

Responses are Appriciated!.....Thanks in Advance.....

Jeff

A folder where stuff is stored in order to make your computer boot and work
faster.

If you want to delete stuff from it, you can safely delete anything at all
excepting layout.ini and reboot the computer. Next time you reboot, it will
put stuff back but not likely the same as you already had in there.

The folders stores help files that help Windows find the files need to start
an application on your hard drive. Without the help files, Windows would
need to search your drive to find the files need to start an application.

You can delete any and all of the files in the folder (including
layout.ini). Windows will rebuilt the folder as you use your applications.
However often, if ever, you delete the files in this folder is up to you. I
do a delete periodically especially after I install an application upgrade
that changes the installation folder. For example, Office XP installed to
Office10 and Office 2003 installed to Office11.

isnt just "help files". Never was just that.

Yes you CAN delete them but if you delete layout.ini you are in for trouble.

Not at all. It will be rebuilt.

On occasion, I have noticed that the prefetch system stops working,
new info is not added to the folder when progs are loaded. I fix this
by not just emptying the prefetch folder but deleting it (as a system
folder it is recreated on the next boot).

Poor wording. I meant files that help not Windows Help files.

I delete layout.ini and the file is recreated as I use applications and the
prefetch folder is repopulated.
