Range Select down goes to 65535 not the end of my data

I have a spreadsheet with data in the first 1200 (dynamic) rows in colmun A.
If I do the magical SHIFT/END DOWN ARROW in just column A, It will highlight
to the end of my data only. BUT if I do the same while highlighting all my
columns (some are fuller than others) it takes me to the very end of the
spreadsheet (row 65535). I want it to just highlight to row 1200. I've
cleared contents in rowns 1201 - 65535 and deleted them but to no avail.

You have to save the file immediately after zapping the rows and,
depending on the version, you may have to close the workbook.
IME saving was ok in xl97 & xl2k, but I had to save & close the book in
xl03.
 
I deleted the rows, saved the file and then closed it for good measure
running 2K. It still selects all the way to 65535. I do have n auto-filter
but turning it off does not fix the issue. I've even checked for formatting.
What next?
