Hello...

I am getting seemingly random playing of sounds, tv/movie promos, etc. on my
system. This seems like it is an adware application connected to the
internet...

I've run a full system scan with the latest spyware/virus definitions and my
system is "clean."

I've checked the Add/Remove Programs list and everything looks normal -- no
suspicious or unfamiliar programs...

I've checked the Task Manager for a list of all processes currently running
and nothing is out of the ordinary...

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how can I get rid of these
random audio events!

Thanks
c

defaults",close, then open device mgr, expand the sound tree,R.click sound
hardware,select uninstall,do for all sound hardware w/o restart,once thru,
go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:netsh Winsock reset then type:EXIT Restart

And Andrew E. gives bizarre and dangerous information once again. The
only part of what he wrote that is useful is for you to check your firewall.

CClif - you haven't cleaned up your computer correctly and/or you do not
have Service Pack 2 installed. If you don't have SP2 installed, clean up
the computer and install it after doing the preparatory work. If you do
have SP2 installed, clean up the computer.

A. Malware removal

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to
do all scans in Safe Mode.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/sicherheit/35905/multi_av_scanning_tool.html
- download site

The site is in German but David's tool is in English so don't let that
worry you. Scroll all the way down to almost the bottom of the page and
you'll see a box titled "Infos Zum Download - Multi-AV Scanning Tool".
You'll see "Download von www pctipp.ch" and the live link to download
Multi_AV.

You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your
malware here:

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the first link above (not here, please).

B. Service Pack 2

Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist -

Order SP2 on CD from MS - http://tinyurl.com/6g675

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops
are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may
be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all
your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

There was an article in PC magazine recently where
somebody had written an article about a similar
situation.

Turns out that the sounds were assigned to various
events (buddy on/off line) in an IM app (can't remember
which). It sat in the SysTray and wasn't readily observed
doing things unless it was opened into a window.

Do you have any crap like that running?
