Random shut down

Hey everyone, my computer keeps randomly shutting down
and i have just put in a new hard drive and installed XP
PRO, please if anyone have any idea of what the problem
could be, contact me thank you.

You computer could be overheating. As you just installed a hard drive, I
would recheck the cable locations to ensure that you have not blocked air
flow to cool the CPU. Also, check that your fan is working.

Your memory ram may be the culprit. Ram that may work fine under Win 98 (I'm
assuming you were using that prior to installing XP) , may not work properly
under Xp. Do you have any stop errors prior the shut down ? Is the system
recovery set to auto restart ? If it is , set it not to in System Properties
/ Advanced. Jym
 
depending on what kind of mobo you have, there will be a heat sensor on it that can be read in the BIOS. Some ASUS boards have GUI utilities allowing you to track your fan speed, cpu temp, etc. If anything, find a good utility allowing you to do just that and try to rule that out. if that isn't the case, you may also try clocking your cpu down. ...yes, down, soetimes at regular speed a cpu will experience inherent errors that disappear at lower speeds. But hopefully, it won't be that serious a problem. And like Jym said, RAM can be fickle.
