Random processes stealing 50% CPU

Hi,

I've a problem on my XP Pro setup that I can't locate, and am looking
for ideas...

For some reason, seemingly random time-wise, one process on my Desktop
suddenly shoots up to 50% CPU. Each time the process is different..
I've seen:

firefox.exe
rundll32.exe
(often) explorer.exe
googledesktop.exe
(nvidia something..)

Happens now at least twice a day.

When I kill the offending process, quite often, a completely unrelated
process takes over that 50%. I kill that, and it moves on again to yet
another random process.

The only way to beat it seems to be to reboot, until it happens again.
Process Explorer shows memory is ok. No faults anywhere else I can tell,
and normal ops seems ok.

I'm guessing its a shared DLL somewhere, but not quite sure how to track
it down. Normal ideas of "what did I last install" escape me.. and I've
tried removing a few of the last ones I can remember, but no success.

Any ideas?

Adrian

Perhaps you have a hyper-thread CPU. The process is being handled like
you have multiple CPUs but the "hyperthread" part isn't a real CPU. So
the 50% is sort of a bogus reading.

Theres definitely a performance impact on the machine.. Other procsses
halt for a few seconds..

Yeah.. thats what I try, but then the next one "takes over" the 50%.. so
I kill that.. and it moves on.. Problem is I just can't see a commen link.

The ones in my list are just a shortlist example..

Hello Adrian,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I suggest we first restart the computer in Safe Mode to see
if the problem also occurs in this mode. Safe Mode loads a minimally
protected-mode configuration, disabling Windows device drivers and using
the standard VGA display adapter.

1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose the Safe Mode with Network, and press Enter.

Note: Some third party applications and hardware devices cannot be used
during Safe Mode. You will temporarily be unable to connect to the Internet
while in Safe Mode.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

Hi Ken,

Can I ask what this actually proves? If I restart in safe mode, I
probably won't be able to run half the programs anyway..

Adrian

Have you tried running msconfig and removing all items from the start menu?
Did you check the registry at
HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINES\Software\Microsoft\windows\current version\run?

Hello Adrian,

Actually, more 3rd applications cannot start in Safe Mode. That will help
us verify if the CPU usage issue occurs in a clean system mode. And then we
can use msconfig to troubleshoot the root cause one by one.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

I've a current theory that its the Nvidia drivers causing problems.
There was an update on the nvidia site that I've just upgraded to so I'm
testing that now.

I found a bunch of event messages this morning from Nvidia about other
apps hanging (including those I've seen crash)..

Will notify back to the group.
