Have you tried a System Restore back to a point before the problem started?

Overheating can freezing . Go inside the case and using compressed air blow
out all fans , openings and components (including power supply) . Jym

I'm in the same situation. I've tried everything - Spybot, Adware, frequent disc cleanups etc. The overheating theory may be worth trying, although for me the freeze can come during boot up or I can go for several hours without a problem. I paid for MS support but nothing has worked.

I am seriously considering using my Sony recovery discs to re-load the system. I've done this with W98 but is it advisable with XP?

Have you looked in the Event Viewer , ( Control Panel / Performance and
Maintenance / Administrative Tools ) and see if there are any related error
posted at the same time as the freezes ? Jym

Thanks Jym, I've looked in the Event Viewer and there's nothing obviously wrong, apart from this warning which come up a few times a day but not coincidental with the freezes:
"Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address 820B18DAF1C9. The IP address being used is 169.254.236.107."
I don't think it's relavent, is it?

Reformatting and reinstalling will fix many problems . Operating system
freezing
is very hard to pinpoint the cause. If it is hardware related reinstalling
will not help. The process of elimination is your next step. If the cause is
third part software , remove it and see if it still freezes . The easiest
way would be to reformat and work only with the operating system and default
video drivers and wait and see. Replace software one by one and check for
dependability each time. On the hardware side I would guess memory modules ,
processor or power supply. This would have to be done by swapping out the
components one by one. Have you tried to run for a extended period of time
in safe mode ? Try this and post back if more ideas are needed. Good Luck ,
Jym

Greetings,

I am having the same problem with my Presario notebook. I know it envolves overheating because I checked everything else, including hard drive replacement and bios upgrade. Does anyone know if and how I can access the fan and/or thermal control functions?
