RAMDRIVE for XP

Is there something like a RAMDRIVE for XP? I wish I could put the paging
file in the RAMDRIVE and my computer will run much faster! By the way, with
the RAM so big nowadays, why do you need a paging file anyway?

Hi,

Do you realize what you are asking? The paging file is there to allow the
use of the hard drive as memory for when you have insufficient ram for what
the system is trying to do. To create a ramdrive and force the paging file
into it is sort of redundant, as you will run out of ram quicker, and then
try to force the overflow back into the physical ram via the paging file. Is
this making sense to you?

No, it would run *slower*. Doing what you suggest makes no sense.
It's like borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. You'd be taking
memory away from Windows use, then giving it back in the form of
a page file in a RAM drive. Since you would create extra need for
paging in exactly the same amount as the size of the RAM drive
page file, you would accomplish nothing except the extra overhead
associated with theRAM drive.

RAM drive software is available, but, except in special
circumstances, is usually counterproductive when running Windows.
It is *certainly* counterproductive to use it the manner you
suggest.

Putting the Paging file into a ramdrive will actually hurt performance,
instead of helping it, but you can still create Ramdisks in XP. There is a
driver for it that you can manually choose if you browse through all the
drivers published by Microsoft. There are several links on the web that
explicitly walk you through the process and there are also some good third
party ramdrives.

Hope this helps,

Don't. It is a fundamental bad concept. Likened to trying to fit a
truck with an auxiliary tank to cross the desert and finding the only
place to put it is *inside* the existing tank. You would just force
items to be moved from one part of RAM to another when there would have
been plenty of space anyway.
By the way, with
the RAM so big nowadays, why do you need a paging file anyway?

Yes, there are hardware RAM-drive solutions on the market now that
(contrary to what others have said) will make windows (or any other
OS) much, much faster; this is accomplished by using NVRAM as an
actual hard drive; not using the system memory via a software
solution. This allows you to install the OS and page file directly on
the ramdrive.

Of course, these things cost about $5K. Check it out:
