Just wondering,
anyone know why my windows xp home edition reports less ram than there is
actually installed?
My system came with 256 mb of installed ram, but I recently installed another
ram card of another 256 mb, now totalling 512 mb for my system.
However, I noticed that when I check my system for total ram, instead of
reporting that there is 512 mb, it tells me there is only 480 mb.

If anyone has any ideas as to why, please fill me in.

If your system does not have a separate video card with it's own memory,
then a portion of system memory is allocated/shared to run your system
graphics. Check your system manual. It will tell how much system memory is
shared. In your case, it's 32mb.
 
512-480=32... your graphics is shared video and is using 42
MB of your RAM for graphics.

If you have an open AGP slot, you can buy a graphics card
with built-in GRAM and then the system won't use your RAM
for graphics. You can also get PCI graphics cards if you
don't have an AGP slot.

It is meaningless for most users, 480 MB is plenty for most
users.

correction 32 not 42 [typo]

You probably have a video adapter that's integrated into the
motherboard that uses 32 Mb of RAM for video memory.

That indicates that your video, probably an on-board chip rather than a
plug-in card, has been assigned 32 MB by the BIOS for use as the video
RAM
