hello there,

i am a multimedia student, and im looking to upgrade my
RAM. But i need to know a bit more about how it all
works. i built my computer, so i know my way around, but
im just not sure what is and isnt compatable. i have
512mb of PC2700 ram, does the upgrade have to be the same
size and bus speed, or can it vary, such as mine + 256mb
PC2(pick a number)?

thankyou for your time :-)

It needs to be pretty much the same speed and type. Not necessarily the
exact same brand. I tried adding some PC3200 RAM to a computer that was
already using PC2700, and it didn't work. I could use either the PC2700
stick or the PC3200 stick, but if I put them both in at the same time, it
crashed. I'm sure somebody else could give you a more detailed answer, but
the gist is that the two sticks have to be pretty much the same specs.

Alan

To be certain of your RAM upgrade, it should match the original RAM specs
"precisely". The size of the RAM stick is unimportant, as long as your M/B
supports the size. IE, if your board only accepts 512 meg sticks, don't try
putting a 1 gig stick into it.

Even matching precisely, some (many?) have problems, as Windows XP, and some
M/B's are real finicky about RAM.
