I just upgraded RAM from 512 to 1G. Motherboard supports
up to 1G. The computer is freezing up, will not reboot,
etc.
I removed 1 512 stick & replaced it with the old 256.
Works a little better @ 768. (not really much difference
@ 768 than 512). Is it OK to have 1 sick @ 512 and 1
stick @ 256? Or should they be equal?

Thanks,

AJA

The sizes need not be equal, however both sticks must have identical
specifications.

Depends on the motherboard. Some/many/most require identical pairs, or at
least take a severe performance hit if they are not identical.

Ensure the RAM is of the correct type. If you're not sure, the folks at
Crucial are very good matching RAM to your motherboard.

Hi...
This is a tough one with out knowing what make or model of motherboard you have installed...
Some Motherboards (MB) supports interleaved RAM where each stick must be equal to the other in size and speed. Some MB supports different speeds of RAM and mixing them up will cause the memory controller to down clock to the slowest RAM module speed.
Sorry need more info
