RAM Tester?

After adding a stick of 512 Meg RAM to my system (which already had 2
256Meg sticks), the system has been running flaky. Ironically, it's
mostly MS apps which have frequent crashes - Outlook Express, IE, etc.
-- Even Windows Help.

Is there any freeware available that would allow me to test my RAM to
see whether I got a bad stick?

BTW -- this is under WinXP Pro.

Thanks!

"Windows Memory Diagnostic"

It's something of a misnomer: it doesn't run under Windows, but rather from
a boot floppy it creates. (I believe there are alternatives for machines
without Floppy drives.)

It's possible that the memory stick is good, but you're having compatibility
problems. You may wish to remove the old DIMMs and try the new one by
itself.

Good luck.

Address altered. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

You can find a few free ram testers, DocMemory is one, through here :

Go to http://www.memtest86.com/ and download a free copy of their
memory test software. Run it overnight.

The ram is most likely good. It just that some ram sticks may not like
being in bed with other unrelated ram sticks. As an aside, that's one
good reason if you buy a PC to get the ram you'll need 3 years from now.
This way it will match.

www.memtest.org

Take the fifth download - package for floppy. Run it to make a bootable
floppy version, boot that and let it run overnight

Thanks to all that replied. As it turns out, the RAM was bad. Memory
Tester showed all kinds of errors after only 30 or 40 minutes. Without the
stick in the PC, no errors.
