ram requirements

My question is simple: can I install W XP Professional on a laptop with only 9mb ram ?

I realize that 128mb is the minimum recommended but I'm wondering how bad will it run on just 96mb ram.

1) I've tried to buy more memory but I have an older pentium mmx laptop with 96mg ram and ram upgrades for it are no longer available. I was hoping to find a 128mb chip which with the soldered in 32mb standard would have given me 160mb ram. I was going to swap out the 64mb upgrade already installed

2) laptop currently has W 98 1st edition

What I'm trying to do is install a linksys .11G pcmcia card (wpc54G) which will only work with W98 SE. I don't want to spend $200 upgrading to W98 SE.

I'm hoping that XP Pro will work well enough on 96mb ram to allow me to connect wirelessly to my router --> the ONLY APPLICATION I will ever run on this laptop would be MSN Messenger.

Any guidance would be appreciated

I own a copy of Windows XP Professional which I am hoping to install on the laptop which currently has

No, you cannot install Windows XP Pro with only 96MB of RAM.
On that old computer, you need to install Windows 98 or maybe
Windows 2000. Besides, if you already installed XP on another
computer, you cannot use that same Product Key with a second
installation on another computer.....won't activate.

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional

Terrible.

It WILL work, but will be so slow that you will find it impossible to use.

As an experiment, I've installed Win XP Pro on a Pentium 75 desktop
(overclocked to 100) with 80MB of RAM.

What's the speed of your processor?

As Carey Frisch says, you'd best stick with that.

1. this is an unused XP Pro license at work where we bought a series of licenses and just 1 media cd. I don't think there is an activation involved but that's irrelevant right now. (Since there are still unused licenses)

2. the toshiba laptop came with W 98 First Edition but the wireless card I want will only work with W98 Second Edition. Too bad there aren't inexpensive updates available

3. are the requirements for Home XP lower? so low that you think it may work?

My processor is 266 pentium mmx. Do you think that with 160mb it will work ok with XP Pro

Unfortunately W98 1st edition doesn't support the .11g wireless standar

Thanks

I still think it will be slower than you will be willing to put up with for
any length of time. I find P-600 to be about as slow as I can stand on XP.

Go ahead, try it. You've got nothing to lose!
