My sister recently moved out so i decided to take the RAM from her old
computer and put it into mine. I had 512mb in one slot and i added another
512mb from my sister. The RAM fit fine and everythin was goin great. However,
once i hooked my computer back up nothin appeared on the computer screen. It
was just a black screen...i've tried 3 different monitors so it's obviously
the computer.

Any help wouild be really appreciated

Is it properly seated? Is it the same exact type of RAM your system
requires?

obviously the RAM did it.

The memory needs to be an exact match to the stick you have. Sounds
like it's not.

Why would you try different monitors when the last thing you did was
play with ram?

Almost certainly the RAM type your sister had wasn't identical to yours.
Windows XP is extremely sensitive to minor differences in RAM sticks, and
you can hardly ever get away with doing this.

Take out your sister's RAM. Unless you run particularly RAM-hungry
applications, you probably wouldn't see any difference in performnce anyway.

yes...the EXACT same RAM (i jus looked at both pieces) and both fit well (no
connectors are showing)...it really looks fine to me

Any more suggestions?

You did unplug your computer before putting the RAM in, right?

My Ram:

AMPO PC3200 DDR SDRAM 184-Pin

Sister's RAM:

Samsung PC3200 DDR SDRAM 184-Pin

doesn't that constitute identical RAM?

It is absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the manufacturer's
web site for specific instructions and compatibility requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the correct type of RAM needed:

SiSoft's Sandra

Belarc Advisor

Unlimited Possibilities' AIDA32

Lavalys' Everest Home

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database
to help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model
computer and/or motherboard.

Nope... Ken said, I said, and other people have said... "NO!" (Really, I'm
not just giving you a hard time.) If everything from the voltage to the
response isn't proper for what your MOBO can support (not so much an OS
issue as an MOBO issue in my opinion) you can have problems with conflicting
types of RAM. To ensure that it works your voltage should at least be the
same. The specs for your brands of (I don't know them off the top of my
head) may be varied from 2.2v to 3.0v and I'm buggered if I know what you've
got there. Needless to say one works and the other doesn't. Pull it and
replace it with one from the manufacturer OR check into your BIOS settings
for additional options but that's a long hairy road.

Just because it FITS doesn't mean it's exact. Check BIOS settings and
disable parity if that's an option - you MIGHT get it to run then.
