XP Home machine, 2.2 cely with integrated video. He (my friend) currently
has 128mb (with only 2 slots [it's a Dell 2400]). I saw a deal for a pc2700
256 for $35 (he'd buy 2), but every once in a while I see a 512 for $50.

Considering the integrated video, would 640 perform noticably better than
512?

integrated video only shares so much then the rest is system ram.
64megs shared would be pretty high.
When buying ram for a dell make sure of the specs, visit a memory site
crucial,Kingston etc.

Thanks for your reply. Since you seem to know, would 384mb be adequate? As
of right now, 128 lags a good amount, and he doesn't do any serious gaming
or video editing or anything (just internet and word processing mostly).

Probably not. Exception would be if he has a large resident program (e.g.,
WinFax) that uses a lot of RAM up front.

I would consider 256 MB minimum for reasonable XP Home performance, and 512 MB
"ideal" for the non-power user.
