i saw in some post a few days ago about a command you can
put in the command prompt to stop the system from shuting
down when the blaster worm starts doing it's thing. we
can't even download the patch in time cos it's shuting
off the pc

easiest way it to download it at a friends house and put it on cd. also
include the free cleaners from mcafee and norton...

type shutdown /a at command prompt

there is a way to halt the shutdown process caused by the
blaster worm:
click start
click run
in the message line type the following
shutdown -a <enter>

now when the machine tells you it is going to shut down,
just click start
click run
click "ok"
it will terminate the shutdown, this way you can download
the patches neccessary. HAVE FUN!!!

Click Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC Locate the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) entry and double click it. Go to Recovery and set the options to
Restart the Service. After you've cleaned your system, set it back to
Restart the Computer.

See http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm#rpc for a removal tool and
link to the MS patch for this issue.
