I am still new to computers and am still learning, so be patient with me if i
dont get the terms correct. When I go to my task bar and highlight on file,
edit, view, tools and help, a clear box pops up and i have to move the cursor
over it to highlight it to read what it says, the favorites still appear the
same as always, this has only started within the last day or so. how do i fix
this?

Took a while to figure what you were talking about.

I believe you mean Menubar (the bar at the top of a window that normally has
File Edit View ..... Help acroos the top).

What application are you in: Windows Explorer?
Internet Explorer? Word?

You may need to reset you Display Settings or how Menus are displayed.
But first we need to know the application.

Do you have to click on the Name (e.g., File) in order for a dro-down menu
to appear, or does it appear just by moving to the menubar and moveing the
mouse over the word ... never clicking on any name?

What you are referring to is the toolbar at the top of an application like
Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer(for files). It would help if we knew
what application you are using when this happens. Don't worry about not
knowing the terms. We all have to start somewhere, and I much prefer to
explain and solve issues without the techie talk. Now I assume that you are
exploring a file or have a folder like "My Documents" open. Now clicking on
either file, edit, view etc. on the tool bar should open a sub menu with
additional choices specific to your oringinal choice of file, edit, view etc.
Now clicking on the following link :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm will take you to an excellent
site with all sorts of little programs(scripts) that will fix many issues
that seem impossible to fix for the beginner. Double clicking on these
scripts will activate the little program and you simply follow the on screen
prompts(little windows with instructions or details in them) and let the fix
run. Now I would suggest you try line 192 on the right side or line 216. If
neither of those fix your issue then please post back. Thankyou and welcome
to the computing world. TTFN.

I think that you are saying that the text has become unreadable ie instead
of being black on white it is white on white - in which case you can only
read it if you highlight it - because it highlights in blue.

I have no idea how you modify the appearance of the Toolbar.

I have looked at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm. Why does it
have to have a black on black scrollbar - why not white on black or black on
white?

It adds the following:

"Disclaimer: These registry edits and script files are presented "as is".
Every effort has been made to ensure the files work as stated. I assume no
responsibility for your use of these files." which is hardly suitable for a
beginner.

Kelly is a volunteer--a very nice person who likes to help people and offers
her edits and scripts for free to anyone in the world who wants them. If you
go to someone who runs a business and charges for their service, it's
reasonable to expect them to reimburse you for problems their services might
cause, but it's *not* reasonable to expect someone like Kelly to do that.

Use her edits and scripts or not as you choose, but considering their price,
don't expect her to take any extra responsibility for them.

All that said, Kelly is very good at what she does, and all her stuff is
extremely reliable. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with it.

The OP said that she was new to computers and therefore I was saying having
looking at the website that I am not new to computers and I find it a bit
overwhelming.

Forget what I said about the scrollbars - which was incidental. And I am not
sure whether the fact of Kelly being a very nice person, or not, comes in to
it.

I wasn't commenting on her but her website.

I ignored the comment about the scrollbars, which was a trivial matter. I
read your comment as your saying that the fact that her web site has a
disclaimer on it means that her fixes shouldn't be used. Was I wrong?

You two know how to get off topic. As for the original question,
think that you are seeing a white on white toolbar. One thing tha
you could try in your attempts to fix it would be to right click o
your desktop, click properties, go to the tab called Appearance, an
change the font color for the Menu

This is getting silly - but the advice for what seems to me is a rather
complicated site was given to a self-confessed new user. I found looking at
the site made me dizzy and I have long experience of using PC's so that I
was questioning the use of that site to the OP - warning or no warning.

After all, if someone is a new user and they applied one of the fixes and it
went wrong then they would be in serious trouble.

I know about caveat emptor - but I was pointing out that warning to the OP.

You are obviously very qualified - but the OP is clearly not.

It is horses for courses.
