Quick Launch Registry Hose?

Well, I finally managed to get the malware/adware crap
off my production machine (I did NOT download anything
related to this- there must have been a malicious website
visited...) but now my registry is, at least, partially
hosed. My Quick Launch toolbar is inoperative and
missing. I can't add it back even though the folder still
exists with all its shortcuts intact. The registry must
be whacked. Short of doing an all-out reg-cleaning
operation (which is always iffy at best)-- or reinstall
of XP, anybody know specifically where in the resgistry I
might be able to repair the Quick Launch feature?
If I ever come across one of these programmers who writes
this adware garbage I will personally kill him and spread
his internal organs across the road outside the building
for the rats to feast upon. This crap causes untold
wasting of resources and time. They should be prosecuted
just like any virus writer- and then made to clean public
bathrooms in New Delhi or something...

TIA,

RH mcse

Shall we start a revolution- a vendetta to take these
guys out- permanently?! Or, just write our congress-
people and hope they do something about it- lol...

I have the exact same problem as of last night...

Unlike so many similar problems with Win2K, mine says
"cannot create toolbar" not "cannot create toolbar for XXX"
where XXX is a string of numbers.

Does ANYBODY have a solution???

Yes, exactly: "cannot create toolbar" ----- Microsoft KB
says you need to recreate the Quick Launch folder and
shortcuts--- but they still exist for me. It has to be
the registry. Freakin' malware geeks. I say burn 'em at
the stake! Roast 'em toast 'em! Idiots.

i miss my quick launch... :(

I too lost my quick launch capabilities last night. I am
getting the message "cannot create toolbar". How DO you
recreate the Quick Launch folder???

does your Quick Launch folder still exist here:

C:\Documents and Settings\(USERNAME)\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

If not, just create a new one and reboot. If it DOES
exist and you still aren't able to re-enable it, you are
experiencing the same thing I am---- which I got as a by-
product of cleaning from malware. I think the registry is
hosed--- still waiting for an answer out there...

Actually, now I see how to make it work, but it is inapplicable to the present malware problem (see extensive other postings that show up of you do a search here for the quotated phrase cannot create toolbar)

Check the URL- it works. You may have to add the wrapped
part of the tect string manually (us;240133)

Yes, it would be nice to get an answer to this. I've had the same problem, and if anyone ever answers this question and they don't post it here, I will. It's amazing how much you use something and don't even notice you do.

A partially helpful workaround: Right click on the taskbar and select "Minimize All Windows" or "Show the Desktop" (whatever -- diffo with XP and 2000). At least, until someone posts a fix, it will allow you to get to the desktop without minimizing your windows one at a time.

Thanks, good workaround to get to the desktop. Sure miss
my 10 Quick Launch apps icons though! (BTW, Kelly is
working on this one. I will post if she finds me an
answer.)

I gave up and called Microsoft Support. They were stumped
and acknowledged the 'epidemic' nature of this problem
due to the flurry of recent newsgroup postings. After
working through the standard troubleshooting approaches
for nearly two hours, we were left with only one choice:
boot to the OS disk and run a repair. This did work but
was a timely fix and my toolbars are finally back.

If I EVER come across one of these adware/malware authors
I will personally behead that person and send the carcass
to Redmond in a cardboard box. These kinds of
frustrations cause untold wasting of resources in our
business and provide no value whatsoever. Any online
companies participating in partnerships with such
organizations should also be chastised. Following are two
such entities which should receive a barrage of critical
email. Feel free to write them with your explicit
expressions toward their invasive products:
(e-mail address removed) , (e-mail address removed) .
I already have and they gave me the typical excusive
response.

Good luck with YOUR O.S.

According to many posts by "Ramesh [MVP]", this problem may
be cause by Blazefind or any other malware (that modifies the
"Userinit" registry value). For more information use Google
Advanced Groups Search to search for:

Ramesh Userinit "Quick Launch"

Note: On the aforementioned web page make certain that you click
on the hyperlink to "Additional Windows ME/XP Cleaning
Instructions" and follow those steps, too.

Did that, didn't work. There was no such registry entry.

The shortcut I came up with (which I don't like, but it's better than nothing) was to set up a folder on my Desktop that has a copy of my Quick Launch bar shortcuts, then have that folder appear on the left side of my taskbar. Then I just have to click it for all the shortcuts to appear on top. Not a great fix, but better than nothing.
