Hi All

I have 2 WinXP home edition PCs networked together by Ethernet, but I can't
get them to do a simple file share.

I've just checked TechNet and it says 'oh this can be done quite simply and
will only take 1 day' .... what???

I know its a lot to ask, but could anybody post me a short, sharp idiot's
guide on how to set this up.

I can't believe how complex this has been made in the Home edition when the
Prof edition can be set up in minutes!!!

Many thanks.

Hi Randy

Thanks for coming back to me and sorry for the sparse info.

The 2 pcs are connected via an ethernet hub, are in the same workgroup and
ping each other fine.

If I connect a Win98 machine to the network then the WinXP's can see the
Win98's shared folder no problem if I use the \\Server method.

Can I use this type of method to connect up 2 WinXP home machines?

Rgds

are your machines in the same workgroup?

I share your frustrations...........! TOTALLY
Been fighting with network problems nearly all weekend.
Windows XP Home on both desktop and laptop.

My LAN network is simply my desktop and my laptop connected by a ethernet router.
Darned if I can fix it so I can print from the laptop through the network.
My printer has a usb cable only, straight shot to the desktop.
Everything else connects to the router and obviously use ethernet connections.
Is that the source of my problems?

Have you tried the Network Setup Wizard? Fully read all the info in
Help about this?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

I assume you have enabled sharing to the files etc you wish to share on each
PC and that both are in the same workgroup. Sorry thsi may be obvious but
just checking anyway.

I wish i had a nickel for everytime I used the wizzard this past weekend
Also,, it keeps on creating a network bridge but I found a way to stop tha
through the support pages. Yup... all has to match exactly or it won't work
I know all too well, when you become frustrated, it's awfully easy to overlook the obvious
Thanks Ted!

Yes Rob,, read my response to Rob
I'll give it a rest and then have at it again and maybe if I get lucky
it'll jump right out at me.. some tiny little detail overlooked
I've since learned there are some issues with the drivers and networking my specifi
printer in XPHome. It's an Epson Stylus CX6400 all in one
I may end up having to un/re-install my printer drivers on both machines and start
from scratch. Thanks Rob
