questions before I buy/upgrade

I've been using Frontpage since Frontpage97. I've tried other products but
love Frontpage. I upgraded to 98 because of a bug in 97 and then to 2000
because it was a gift. Both upgrades were a nightmare of changes for the
sake of change to sell an upgrade while losing some good features, yet I'm
still drawn to this new version because of the lack of server extensions
needed. However the " Windows SharePoint Services" scares me, are they just
another version of the same thing that I would have to pay for? Is it the
same as the Personal Web Sever of old? Do I need it at all? It is purley
hobby sites I design and I don't know a UNIX or Microsoft server from a hole
in the ground. I use a number of hosts, can I continue to update through FTP
like always without it? And a specific question: Can I select multiple files
in the folder list?(unlike now) thanks

FP2003 still use extensions, the FP2002 extensions. In order to use Windows SharePoint Services, you
site must be hosted on a Windows 2003 IIS Web server with Windows SharePoint Service being supported
by the web host.

FTP support is improved over prior versions, and since you use FTP, then having the ability use the
extensions is of no use to you since you must publish via FP's http mode to use any of the FP
components that require the FP run-time extensions.

If you are happy with you current version there really is no need to upgrade.

BTW: At least from FP2000 and up, if you switch to folder view, you can select multiple file to copy
or even do a search and replace on, etc. FP2003 does allow you to select multiple file in Folder
List View.

If anything FP 03 has many added new features as well as the same features
your used to using.

Windows SharePoint Services was also available in 02, but in order to use
this your host / server must support it. The WSS is really designed for
groups and organizations that want better callaboration in an Intranet
enviroment, so if you are just a hobbyist you probably wouldn't use this
feature. If your hosts does support WSS, I certainly would recommend to give
it a try if you enjoy working with new technology.

I personally think one of the best new features in FP is the "View Remote
Server", which is basically a new FTP client in FrontPage. Now if your site
is on a host that does not support the FP extensions, you don't have to use a
3rd party FTP client. Remember that when using FTP to a non supported FP
server, stay away from any component that requires the extensions, as they
will not work properly.

Yes, you can select multiple files, individual files, directories or use the
"Publish" command to transfer files in FP 03.

All in all it sounds like you enjoy using FP as many of us do, so I
personally think the 03 upgrade, was the best that has been offered.
Hopefully in a year or two from now when the next version comes out, they
will incoporate some .Net tools, such as the Web Matrix or even better Visual
Basics .Net.
