Question re indexing

Walter R.

I use Word 2002. I compiled a large index in a large document. Every time I
mark an item for the index, it shows as an (non-printing) item with {abc}
brackets in the text of the document.

Now the index is finished but my document shows hundreds of these bracketed
index references in the text.

This really clutters up the document when I set if for "All formatting
marks".

How can I get rid of these bracketed items? Since the index is finished, I
do not see any need for them any more.

Thanks for any help

Hi, Walter,

Two possibilities:

- Instead of turning on "All formatting marks", go into Tools > Options >
View and turn on all the nonprinting items *except* Hidden text.

- To permanently delete all the index entry fields:
1. Put the cursor in the index and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to "unlink" it
(turn it into plain text, so it's no longer dependent on the index entry
fields).
2. Open the Edit > Replace dialog. In the Find What box, enter
^d XE
Leave the Replace With box empty, and click the Replace All button.

Before you take this step, it might be best to archive a copy of the
document with all the index entry fields still in place -- just in case you
have to do a revision...

Great! Thank you, Jay. I will go for the second option. I think I will just
unlink the index and copy/paste it to the original of the document (saved
before I did the index).
