The icons on my desktop look just fine. The name of the icon is in a small,
blue caption-box underneath the icon.

How can I show the names of the icons without the blue caption-box? It would
look better.

Thanks

Right-click on your desktop and select:

Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web (tab)
and uncheck "Lock Desktop Items", click OK and APPLY.

Also, check this setting:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:
Properties > Advanced > Performance settings >
Visual Effects, place a check next to "Use Drop Shadows
for Icon Labels on the Desktop", then click "apply".

I have the same problem, performed all the functions you recommended, but
nothing has changed - don't know what I did to make this happen in the first
place (I know I must have changed something!) but your recommended fixes were
already in-place. What now?

Right-click desktop > Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web
Uncheck ALL the boxes in "Web Pages" > Ok

Set a standard .bmp file as your desktop background, if you've tried
anything fancy there (eg like setting an animated gif as background)
