I know its off-topic here but I think I'll get a better answer here
than from Compaq support. I have a Compaq Presario 8000 that has 4
USB ports: 2 on the back of the computer and 2 on the front. I
recently tried to plug in an external hard drive on one of the front
ones and it did not work. It works fine only if I use the rear ones.
Is this because the 2 rear ones have to be in use for the front ones
to work? Thanks for your help.

There might be an enable/disable option in the bios or the port are
disconnected for the motherboard. Try Compaq support forum. I am sure there
is some information there.

Two things to try.
Going into the bios see if there is a setting to enable front USB ports
Reading the manual for your mb see if there is a jumper that must be set on
certain pins to enable the front USB connectors.

Also possibly the connectors on the USB ports were not installed correctly
in the first place or maybe aren't even connected (being that it's a Compaq)

Open the case to find out if there are any cables going from the USB ports in
the front of the case to USB headers on the motherboard.

The cables could be there, but might not be connected.

The PC's user manual should have info on where the headers are on the
motherboard.

Hi Steve,

No, that wouldn't be a requirement. I suspect that the front ports are
either disabled in the system bios (or possibly not even connected), or they
are under powered. In the case of the latter circumstance you could add a
powered hub.

Frequently assemblers hook the USB connectors up backwards or not at
all. Open the case and check the connectors to the front USB ports on
the motherboard.

If you don't have the m/b manual it can be difficult to tell which cable
goes to which pin on the header, very easy to get them wrong. Compaq don't
supply m/b manuals, they won't even tell you what's in there, but download
Belarc and hopefully it will tell you what it is. Then you can look for and
download it.

Thanks again but I forgot to ask how to get into the system bios (F10
at startup) ? Thanks and hava a nice weekend
