Question on Repair and Restore Points in XP. Thanks

A few questions. Thanks much in advance. I will buy a WIN XP book
(nside and Out) today.

1. Is there a repair option in XP (Home and Pro), if I were to boot
and press the "R" key repeatedly? I do not have XP at home but am
trying to help a friend who lives quite some distance away from me.

2. How about for Windows ME?

3. I have seen a program called GoBack and am not sure if it comes
with Norton System Professional or with other programs or just happens
to be loaded by the PC manufacturer. Looking for such a program to
help out someone.

4. I have seen Winrescue at www.superwin.com that works well in
backing up the registry, favorites and many other items. I have it and
use it.

For informational purposes does Win XP, ME have some sort of utility
to backup the registry and other items and restore them (NTBACKUP or
something)?

Thanks so much
Joe

In XP, you can boot the ORIGINAL CD that was used to install XP from and
choose a repair or upgrade install. This will not cause loss of installed
programs or user data, although programs must be (and nearly all are, but
not so when it comes to drivers) XP compatible. You will need to register
and supply the same CD Key as was originally used with that same CD and that
same computer when Windows XP was first installed (or you might get
permanently locked out). You can also purchase the FULL RETAIL VERSION of
XP-Pro and upgrade whatever version of Windows (I'm not sure about 95) you
currently have, including if you have an OEM version of XP-Home or XP-Pro.

To see if your machine and its current operating system is XP compatible you
can do a 33meg download and run this program:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx

You must perform all critical, and should perform all other Windows, updates
after performing an XP repair install. Be sure to turn on your built-in XP
firewall before even thinking about connecting to the internet. Install and
update (and keep updated) antivirus software, too.
2. How about for Windows ME?

You can boot into Windows ME and then run the setup program on the ME CD. It
might run automatically when you insert that CD. You will need the CD Key.

GoBack is now owned by and sold separately by Symantec. If you use it with
ME or XP then turn off System Restore functionality. It is both HDD and CPU
intensive, so you need a decent system in order to use it without its
operations tending to interfere with (slow down) normal usage of Windows.
It's pretty good.

In ME and XP, system files are backed up using the System Restore utility.

Thanks WinGuy. Fantastic answer. Helped a lot. Now if I could only get
my clients Windows Media Player to actually play sounds through the
speakers. Says it is playing but no sounds except MIDI files will play
but volume will be set to zero will you clik on the file. WInamp works
fine. This was a Win XP Home install over (not an upgrade) Win ME. SB
Live is on there. Updated drivers and everything. Sine Winamp works,
it makes sense that WMP 9 should.
Oh well.

Your reply to the previous post was wonderful and helpful to me.

GooBack I think comes with Norton System Works Pro 2004-not sure about
2003. I need to check that and also ensure it is the same product.

I like Winrescue from www.superwin.com. Not sure if it does the same
thing as GoBack but can be run from DOS. Also found Barts PE (someone
made me a CD) is fantastic to retrieve data from crashed systems that
will not boot.

Take care
Joe
