Hi
When I look at Folder Options/File Types I have among many others (NONE)
Audio CD & (NONE) DVD Video.
My DVD Writer no longer recognises blank DVDs. Question is should there be a
(NONE) Blank DVD in the list?
WinXP SP2
Regards
Bill

Those are normal listings in File Types.

As to your problem, have you changed media recently? A new box that is a
different brand? If yes, buy a box of a brand that has worked for you in
the past. If you still have trouble, check your manual for directions on
cleaning the drive. If that fails, it's possible that the laser for
reading/writing DVDs is shot and the drive needs replacing.

Hi Sharon
No, I haven't changed media brand. I have been using Verbatim for years now.
The drive can read DVDs ,music CDs,and data CDs but as soon as I put a blank
DVD in the tray the drive just spins it. When I press the eject button the
tray takes about 30secs to open and the blank DVD is still spinning when it
comes out.

I just replaced a CD/DVD writer because it wasn't recognizing blank CDs
and was starting to get "iffy" about reading existing data CDs. It could
do everything else fine.

My understanding (which could be wrong!) is that these drives have two
lasers for reading/writing - one for CDs and one for DVDs. That means
one laser can fail. Operations relying on that laser will fail.
Operations using the working portions of the drive will continue to
succeed. Assuming my CD laser had bit the dust, I replaced the drive
and the new one works perfectly with all my media and some new media
that wasn't supported on the old drive as well.

I haven't read up on the new drives so don't know if they still use two
lasers or not. Even if they don't, it seems reasonable that
re-calibration of a single laser could fail and you could be stuck
working with one kind of disk media instead of the full range.
