I am removing an Aopen burner from my system and replacing it with an
I/O magic burner. The Aopen uses only drivers from XP, but does have
firmware. I plan to remove the drive using device manager, then turn
off the computer, physically remove the drive, install the new burner
and restart the computer.

Am I missing any steps?

Is the firmware actually installed in the computer somewhere and need
to be removed?

Do I need to clean out anything from XP, or does removing it in Device
Manager take care of it all?

I want every possible trace of the Aopen burner removed from the
system. I have had bad experience with XP before following
instructions and removing software the "correct" way and later finding
out that the system still had bits and pieces of stuff remaining.

Thanks.

Firmware is built into the hardware; similar to the BIOS on the motherboard.
That's how the device communicates with the BIOS and the operating system.

To fully remove the device from Device Manager boot into Safe Mode and do it
there. Sometimes you'll find more than one instance of a hardware device
while in Safe Mode and doing it here ensures it's gone.

Do not install the new device till after the old is removed, XP is started
and you see no glitches, then shut it down and install the new one.

Spot on Jerry.

Another pice of information: if you use 3rd party CD writing software it may
need to be reconfigured to use the new CD burner. Not a big issue, but worth
checking before you get frustrated when it doesn't work.
