At the office our developers are busy creating our new XP desktop, they are
locking down the desktop to the point that you have to have admin rights
just to change a mouse. Since they have started this process there has been
nothing but problem after problem with hardware and software, apps don't
work properly, functions within apps don't function etc etc. My question
is, are they locking down the desktop too much? Are they making it
impossible for the XP operating system to function properly? Thanks

Unless you are working for DOD, CIA or whatever super-secret agency, the
measures seem extreme and rather aimed against employees - not to use
personal email and what-not.

Of course, it all depends what policies the adminstrator is supposed to
implement. Just one possibility, functions that require internet access
(even in XP Help, for ex.) to be disabled. Hence, the programs will seem to
have reduced functionalities etc. You might find yourself being able only to
Open, Edit, Print, Save a restricted number of files :)

XP will work fine for the Administrator, don't worry.

In a standard environment the end-user doesn't need many rights and the
desktop can and should be locked down.
Interesting enough, but the problems as described always occur when the
developers or help desk staff start to lock down the working environment,
i.e. the guys who aren't experienced in this task :o)
