I've been reading articles that XP service pack 2 will be downloaded as a
critical update. My question is do you have to have the latest Windows
Update 5 software installed in order for XP service pack 2 to work? Or will
it still work with the Windows Update 4 software? I haven't read this
anywhere and I just wanted to verify it.

I would just open IE and type the V5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
into the address bar. It will scan the PC and recommend you use the
new software. Once V5 is your default, then when AU SP2 is active
you will be prompted that it's available.

When SP2 is released the V4 website will prompt you to upgrade to the V5
site before allowing you to download the update.

FWIW I really like the changes to V5 Windows Update site.

The process should start by installing Ver 5, and the update to
Background Intelligent transfer. These are needed to allow the download
to be interrupted and resumed on reconnecting

You can also set up your computer for automatic updates and the system will
automatically update to SP2..from there you will be configured to use windows
update v5 from then on.

Now I think I know what the problem is -- why I cannot download one
particular update called Windows Xp KB824146 ... it's an MS software update
and when I ran F10 system recovery it wiped out my software and I have yet to
reintall it.
