Question about Read-Only

Recently my husband and I reformatted our computer, backing everything up first. Well, I opened up my access file today and it's opening as a read-only file! I tried going into properties and unchecking read-only, but it won't let me. Is there anything I can do? A way I can resave it as a non-read only or copy and paste it into a whole new database or SOMEthing? It's hours and hours and hours of work. I'd hate to have to start over

If you can't un-check the read only box in properties, it's not an Access issue. It's a Windows permission problem.

To add to Sco's remarks, I'll bet you backed up your data to CD. CDs are
always read only. Once you move everything back, you should be able to reset
the file attributes to Archive.

What do you mean by "move everything back"? I did save it on a CD, so that sounds like it might be the problem. I've reinstalled all of Microsoft Office already. I can open it and look through my nice database, but can't add any new info or change anything! I will try posting in the Windows forum as well.

When you copy a file onto CD, the file is marked as "Read-Only".

When you copy this file back to the hard-disk, this "Read-Only" flag is
carried over to the copy on the hard-disk. When you open this "Read-Only"
file with Access, you cannot edit any data since editing requires "Write"
permission.

You need to find the copy of the database file (.MDB or .MDE) on the
hard-disk and remove the "Read-Only" flag.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the file. Right-click on the file and
select Properties. You should then see a "Read-Only" CheckBox.
