I know little about XP. I'm trying to help a relative
it seems someone installed a partial operating system of XP
just enough to get by.
She is having problems with seeing active x or Java script
on a web page.
My assumption is she needs to get the regular cd and
install the whole thing. XP I mean
Am I missing something?

Thanks, she has told me she has tried to download java
but gets the this program not digitally signed error
she is not all that computer literate, and a bit far away
from me.

Two separate issues here:

1. to get Java installed, see www.java.com
2. to make Active X work on web pages, set the appropriate options in
your web browser. Assuming it's Internet Explorer, see Tools | Internet
Options | Tab: Security | Tab: Custom Level and set as you see fit for
Active X. Note: I keep Active X disabled as it "feel" it is a major
security risk. Even with it diabled, for the web pages I use,it's not
been a problem.

The Java 'VM' engine is *not* relevant to Java*script* which is entirely
different, nor to ActiveX. It is difficult to see how a 'partial'
installation without these could be achieved, so I would go to Internet
Options - Security page, click Default and put the slider to Medium (And
click Apply). That should enable things for most web pages
