Question about file sharing access...

I would like to share a folder (on \\computer1\share1) and give access to
another username on another computer (\\computer2 with username2). I am
using a workgroup. When I try to give permissions to username2 on
\\computer2, Computer1 does not recognize the computer or username. I have
to give permissions to everyone which defeats the purpose right? For some
reason, I cannot tell my computer that I want Username2, which is on
Computer2, to access my files. I cannot understand this. I know with a
domain I can do this. Do I need to create a Hosts file or something. I am
going crazy....Please help with some suggestions. Thanks!

As you have noted, you can give permission based on domain membership within
a domain, because a master list of users is maintained by the domain
controller. In a workgroup there is no master list of users, so the closest
you can come is to create the same users on all computers within a workgroup
and give rights based on the local user list.

So the only way to give permissions to specific accounts is to create the
same accounts on all computers? Ahh! Now that I think about it, in Win2K
that is the way that I had it setup. I just figured that you could give
permissions to certain accounts on remote computers, but this is what you do
when you have a domain that can resolve the computer name or account. I'll
give it a try. Thanks for the info.

I just found a way to have different accounts on different computers but
still be able to access the files using permissions. I went to Control
Panel\User Accounts\User1 and then I noticed under Related Tasks - Manage my
network passwords. I then found that if you click on this, you can tell your
computer what username and logon to use when connecting to a specific server
(computer2). So, I just used Computer2 as the Server, and Computer2\User2 as
the username, and then typed the password for User2. Voila!!! Neat huh?
Thanks for helping me out. I just learned something new!
