Question about AntiVir v.6

After I do an online update there is continuing traffic as indicated by the
Zone Alarm task bar icon. The only way to stop it is to reboot. Is this
normal or is there a problem.

I am running XP Home SP2.

You should be seeing continuous traffic in the ZA icon when using
AntiVir since AntiVir is using localhost and ZA will pick this up and
show it as traffic. It's slighly irritating, but normal.
 
Do other freeware antivirus programs do this to ZA as well? It's almost
impossible to tell when malware is calling home with this continuous show of
traffic.

Yep, it is a little annoying. The other AVs don't do this. I have used
AVG as well as Avast with ZA and no problems there with the traffic
icon. Also, if you want to stick with AntiVir, then you could try
another firewall. Guess it depends on which one you like best, ZA or
AntiVir. :)
