I like to record TV shows/dramas (eg. Lost, Invasion) using my digital
terrestrial box connected to my laptop. It contains a schedule timer to
start recording at specified times (9pm, etc.). However, sometimes I have to
leave my PC switched on in the morning (at 8am) before I go to work... when
I don't make it home in time after work.. or I may go out after work, etc.

Is there any way to make a PC/laptop switch itself on at a specific time, so
that the windows scheduler can perform it's tasks?

Couple of options...

(1) Check in your BIOS settings for automatically turning on at a set time

(2) If the computer is in hibernation (99% off), you may be able to get it
to "wake the computer to run this task" by checking the option on the
Settings tab of the scheduled task's properties.

Check the BIOS settings. As well as being able to set a fixed time that
the computer will start each day, you may be able to trigger it from
mouse/keyboard or LAN activity.
