My sons computer needs reformatting but the disk which came with the
computer is a"Recovery" disk. I would like to know what is left to
recover if the disk is formatted. The firm who made the computer is no
longer in existence.

I have a full copy of XP which came with my computer.
Can I install my full copy on his computer, but use his registration
number.? They are both legitimate copies.

Hopefully someone can help.

Thanks

Question 1. If you use the recovery disk on the computer, all information
should be erased (not securely however) from the drive and it will be
restored to the state when you first purchased the computer.

Question 2. No. The OEM version can't be activated by using the full copy
license and the full copy install can't be activated by using the key from
the OEM version.

He says "full copy of XP which came with my computer." Although he says
"full," if it came with his computer, it's almost certainly an OEM version,
not a retail full one, and this may indeed work.

I presume my copy is OEM as it came with the computer and it says on
the disk "For distribution with a new PC only". It is gold coloured
and marked "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"

I have just looked in control panel, system properties, and it gives a
number with OEM in the middle. Hope this helps

He also stated that the one on his son's computer was a Restore CD Version
of XP. While I would hope that he is successful in the rebuild using the
"full OEM version" CD from his computer while using the Key from his son's
computer, I have a strong feeling that it won't work just like a full
retail,.upgrade and OEM are not key compatible.
