Qualification for OEM?

Hi there,

I have recently (About 3 weeks ago) purchased a new hard drive for my
computer, this cost me roughly £70 and I do not look to be purchasing a new
one in the near future.

I now want to purchase Windows XP Professional OEM from the same
company, who tell me that I need to purchase it with a new hard drive, or a
new motherboard. "Great" I *thought*, but alas "No", apparently it needs
to be on the same invoice!?!? This would mean that I have to purchase a new
motherboard, as there is no need for me to get another hard drive *or* a
worse motherboard than I have already. This would push the total price of
to purchase to about £230, from around £100.

I want to know the "exact" type item that needs to be purchased with XP
Pro OEM to make the qualification, I have read on an internet resource that
it needs to only be a "non-peripheral hardware device", is this so? If so,
that would mean that I could purchase it with a crap modem costing around
£10? I have noticed that many sites cover this purchase automatically by
*giving* such an item free of charge.

I eagerly await your reply, and if anyone could *quote* the exact
reference I would be *most* appreciative!! Thanks loads in advance!

Nick.

There is no "exact" type of item set anywhere in stone. Try a different
vendor. Some will sell you an OEM version along with a USB hub (cheap and
useful if you don't already have one) or even a power cord (can never have
too many of those).

IIRC amazon.com sells them without ANYTHING else.

Many other companies have a broad interpretation of the rules. For example
it's been known for some to sell the OEM version with a printer cable, a
floppy drive or something even cheaper. Shop around and try the web.

Their contract says they can sell OEM versions with non-peripheral hardware. I don't think that really includes USB hubs or power cords. However, you could include an IDE or SATA cable for about $2. That's how I got mine at newegg.com. So, what company are you looking at?

Also make sure you don't end up with a branded OEM version. A Dell branded OEM version may be BIOS locked; i.e., it will only work on certain Dell models that have a matching signature in the BIOS. You want a generic OEM version that will install on any motherboarded system. Once you install that is the only computer that can have that copy of the OEM version. You cannot move it to another computer, but you can change parts in the one where you installed it. The OEM is a FULL install version. You cannot use the OEM version to upgrade from another version of Windows.

Hi Peter,

I shall check the site out, thank you. But what I would still like is
the OEM agreement with the statement! I need to know for future reference
what is needed to quailify for OEM. Cheers for your help.

As many, myself included, have said "it depends on the vendor". The only
people with the real authority to say what is needed to qualify for OEM
editions of their software are Microsoft. And, in effect, they don't.

I don't see *any* OEM versions for sale on the amazon.com site,
with or without hardware.

Why? There are no exact requirements. It depends on the vender.

Wow, this is going to hurt me but Kurt's right.
There's different OEM's for different vendors. Each with their own EULA
and/or statements.
