Hi,

qttask.exe using 99% of my processor. I am using XP-Pro (version 2002,
service pack 2) on an Acer-Aspier-3620 laptop, 1.733Ghz Pentium.

Yesterday I had a "serious error" which automatically shut down the
computer. I've done a full scan for viruses, using AVG free edition,
which found a few (a couple of byte-verify's, and some trojans), and
I've done a disk check of the C drive.

How do I fix this?

thanks in advance for any help!

QTTask.exe is usually associated with Quicktime. However you may be infected with a Trojan
that uses that name or repklaced it.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

i'm no expert, but i think that is 'quicktime taskbar', which you dont need
to use. therefore you can go into administrative services in the control
panel and disable that Service. i know i did, and for me it wasnt taking
nearly that much memory.

Thanks very much for your advice.

I did all you suggested. Sophos found and solved some virus problems,
none of the other modules found any virus problems.

However, this virus fixing made no difference to the problem. I first
discovered that although Task Manager would not let me turn the
process off, it would let me set it to low priority, which made things
very much better.

I eventually uninstalled Quick-time, which solved the problem . . . I
can always install it again later from the latest version online.

So thanks very much, Dave for your advice. Good to remove those
viruses even though it wasn't the cause of the immediate problem.

cheers

Chris
