Have a question about web site uploads with Frontpage XP. I use two
(2) computers in my office:

(1) Laptop
(2) Desktop

...for practical reasons I frequently backup my data between those 2
machines. It is very convenient specially when one computer is at the
service.

However when I move all files from laptop to desktop and decide to
update my web site Frontpage doesn't remember what files have been
updated. As a result sends to the web server the entire site all over
again (with all site's pages and pictures). This process is very time
consuming and it is also annoying.

Questions:

(1) Which Frontpage file is responsible to remember
the last site's upload?
(2) How to tell Frontpage not to send the entire site
again to server?

Please help,
Chris

Hi Chris,

If you are publishing from the PC to site, then the best way to get the updated web onto your laptop, would be to open live from the laptop and then use the FrontPage publish web to transfer the site down to file.

And of course vice versa to update the PC with changes made from the laptop.

Of course, publishing to file can be time consuming as well.

You could also edit your web from both locations by always opening live. It is advisable to periodically publish the current web to file so you have at least a fairly recent backup. if you are a little paranoid like me, you would copy this folder to CD as well.

have you set the publish feature to publish 'changed' pages or 'all' pages - this
is a user setting that you have to change.

It makes a lot of sense to publish only 'changed' pages, will do and I
hope that Frontape will follow directions the right way...

Thank you,
Chris

Mike,
If you are publishing from the PC to site, then the best way to
get the updated web onto your laptop,

The way I work is:

(1) Upload the site directly from desktop using Frontapage
(2) Copy the site to laptop for security reasons
(3) When desktop is at service I continue working on laptop
(4) The problem occures when I upload/update the site from
laptop as Frontapage laods the entire thing on server again
(5) When I transfer my files back to desktop and update the
site again Frontpage loads the whole thing all over again
would be to open live from the laptop and then use the FrontPage
publish web to transfer the site down to file.

As I understand you say:

- make changes live on server and download it back to my office

Is it correct? I always want to be the local copy (in my office)
of the site the original one, not the other way around...
And of course vice versa to update the PC with changes made from
the laptop.

Now I am lost, sorry...

What does it mean "publishing to file"?

opening live.

You are right, but doing so the hard copy on my computer will not
be current and what it would happen when I update the site the
next time?
It is advisable to periodically publish the current web to file

Yes, I am paranoid like you. Please kindly explain what does it mean
"publishing the current web to file"?

Thanks,
Chris

Publish from destop to server. Publish from server to laptop.
Thereafter, all you need to do is to syncronize with the server copy.
BTW, merely copying files from one computer to another is not sufficient.
Publishing is the recommended proceedure.
