In ALL versions of windows before vista (all the way back to 3.1) I would
often choose file->save as (in any program) and browse to the folder in
which I wanted to save my file. I would then click on one of the files in
that folder so that its name appeared in the "filename" text field, then I
would change one or two characters to create a unique name. Hit save and
voila I've saved my file.

In vista however, if I click on a file just to have its name appear in the
"filename" text field and then change a few characers windows maintains that
I am trying to overwrite the file I clicked on. It recognizes the file I
clicked on with higher priority than the filenmae I have typed in teh
"filename" tet field. Can I do anything about this?

It is suprememly annoying

FWIW, I've been using Vista for a while and never saw this. I just tried it
using both Notepad and Word 2007 and had no such issue.

Your mistake might be the clicking on the file, which opens it. Just
highlight it with your mouse instead to select it and change the name.
